Proudly proclaiming itself as Australia’s Country Music Capital, Tamworth is a beautiful city in the New England area of New South Wales.

Sitting across the Peel River, Tamworth is the main provincial centre for the New England region, located midway between Sydney and Brisbane. The region’s population is over 58,000 covering 9,653.25 square kilometres.

Regarded as one of the most progressive and exciting areas in inland Australia, Tamworth combines a city lifestyle with country living, also a long history, culture and sporting facilities.

Apart from its Country Music Capital fame, Tamworth is known for the ‘First City of Lights,’ because it was the first place to use electric street lighting in 1888. Also, because of the high volume of equestrian events held around the city, Tamworth is also known as the ‘National Equine Capital of Australia.’ As such, the Australian Equine and Livestock Events Centre in the city is reportedly the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.

Before European settlement, the Kamilaroi Aboriginals resided in the region. The word ‘budgerigar’ originated from their language. In 1818, John Oxley came through the Peel Valley area, describing it as a ‘luxuriant country.’

By 1831, after the establishment of sheep and cattle stations, the Australian Agricultural Company was granted a lease of 127,000 hectares of land south of the current location of Tamworth. In 1850, a community town was gazetted on the opposite side of the Peel River, later becoming the leading town which was later called ‘Tamworth’ from Tamworth in Staffordshire. As the town prospered, the railway reached the area in 1878.

Tamworth’s population is distributed throughout the region, having three quarters living within the city limits, while the balance residing in the small towns of Nundle, Kootingal, Barraba and Manilla. Other smaller villages consist of Bendemeer, Attunga, Duri, Dungowan, Moonbi, Woolbrook, Somerton and Woolomin.

The Central Business District of Tamworth is situated north of the Peel River, and being the primary business area, has various restaurants, shopping complexes, car dealerships and public facilities.

Being principally a service hub for the North West and New England regions, Tamworth provides services to a population of over 200,000 people. The largest employer is the retail industry, followed by the health and manufacturing services. Other major industries are aviation, transport, education and agriculture, with tourism being a very significant industry, noted as being worth millions of dollars annually to the community.
